Anderson stays hot as Springs rolls past Laconia

Ben Anderson needed just four plays to lead the St. Mary's Springs football team to its first touchdown on Friday night.

The senior quarterback once again was dangerous both running and passing in the Ledgers' 49-7 Flyway conference win at Fruth Field.

Anderson launched a 61-yard TD pass on the fourth play from scrimmage after Garver Buechel got behind the Laconia secondary. It was one of several long plays Springs' offense had on the night.

He got his second TD pass of the night in the second quarter when he hit Jack Holzmann on a crossing pattern that Holzmann took 50 yards to the endzone.

Anderson said his offensive line made his job easy with how much time it gave him to find open receivers.

"Our offensive line has really been playing hard and giving me a lot of time to work," Anderson said. "I mean, it's not very difficult to make some throws when I've got five second to throw.

"And then our guys are getting open and giving me opportunities to get them the ball. We have a bunch of playmakers so when they get the ball, they're going to score."

The Ledgers (4-0 overall, 2-0 in Flyway) had five plays that went for more than 15 yards.

Anderson rushed for a 15-yard score near the end of the first quarter and had a 2-yard TD plunge right before halftime.

Anderson, who had 193 yards and 4 total touchdowns in the first half, only played one possession in the second half because of the large lead Springs built.

Junior running back Will Stellmacher wore the Laconia (2-2, 0-2) defense down in the second quarter, finding multiple runs that went for more than 8 yards.

Stellmacher rushed for 77 first-half yards and a touchdown. He did not play in the second half.

"He's really battled hard," Anderson said. "He kind of didn't know what his role was going to be on the team early on in the season, but now that he's in that role, he's really coming together, and he runs hard.

"He's got the whole package."

Holzmann scored again in the second half on an 80-yard touchdown run. He finished with 151 total yards.

Holzmann's performance highlighted the depth that Springs has in the skill positions. Anderson was able to find five different receivers in the game.

"We've got so many guys," Anderson said. "We've got a four-man rotation at receiver that I know if I get them the ball, they're going to make something happen, along with our tight ends and running backs.

"If I get them the ball, they're going to do the hard work."
