Campbellsport baseball holds off Springs

Every time St. Mary's Springs got a rally going, Campbellsport got out of a jam and responded in the next half inning.

The Cougars scored in each of the last four innings in their 11-8 win against the Ledgers on Monday afternoon at Herr-Baker Field.

Campbellsport (7-6 overall, 4-4 in Flyway) trailed 2-1 heading into the fourth inning. Owen Bong got the big hit, driving in two runs when he singled to right. Bong would come around to score later in the inning, during which the Cougars would scored five runs.

Bong, who is the ninth batter in the order, finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Gage Kohlmann bats eighth and he was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Coach Jim Krug said the bottom of the order came up big today.

"It's been a little bit of a carousel at the bottom of the order and finding who fits in those spots there," Krug said. "Those are two guys that have been emerging so far."

Springs (5-7, 3-5) scored four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Catcher Max Bauer had an RBI single during the fifth; Ben Anderson, who started on the mound and finished the game at shortstop, followed with a two-RBI double.

Following both of those innings, Campbellsport scored two runs to respond in the top half of the next inning.

Krug said his team has played in tight games all season and it is starting to pay off.

"We've talked with our guys all season long about approaches," Krug said. "Different counts [mean] different approaches. You can see as the season goes on that they're really starting to take to what we've been talking about throughout the year.

"A game against Springs is always like that, back and forth, so really proud of the guys for sticking in tonight."

Riley Kohlmann got the win. He pitched five innings and gave up seven runs, though just two of them were earned. He gave way to Gage Kohlmann, who earned the save, pitching two innings of one-run ball.

Gage Kohlmann said his defense came up big to help him slam the door shut.

"My strong defense helped me out," Kohlmann said. "I just executed some pitches and did what I had to do to shut them out."
