Campbellsport soccer comes back to beat Little Chute

Campbellsport’s boys soccer team had already beaten Little Chute in the regular season.

The 16th-seeded Cougars were able to do it again on Tuesday afternoon in a 4-1 WIAA regional quarterfinal win against the No. 17 Mustangs at home.

“We definitely had some confidence,” coach Andy Miller said. “I won’t say we were expecting to win, but we were very hopeful and confident we could come out here and play competitive against them and come out victorious.”

Campbellsport (2-13) trailed within the first 10 minutes, but settled in and proceeded to dominate the final 70 minutes of the match.

“They were not really communicating too well the first 10 to 15 minutes,” Miller said. “Once they settled down and were talking more and staying in their positions and getting back when they needed to, it definitely made a difference.”

The Cougars scored goals in the 17th and 24th minutes. Freshman Andy Lucatero-Reyes scored the first goal on a lob shot from about 25 yards away off of a throw-in from teammate Carter Vant Hoff.

Junior Jacob Allickson scored seven minutes later after Wyatt Donigain had his shot saved by Little Chute goalkeeper Blake Moberg.

All of the goal contributions in the match came from underclassmen. Miller said the growth from his young team has inspired optimism.

“We’re a young team kind of in a rebuild mode and it’s my first year with them coaching so it’s been me adapting to them as much as them adapting to me,” Miller said. “The growth throughout the season, you can definitely see it out on the field.

“The scores don’t always reflect that, but we’ve had some pretty tough opponents.”

Junior Cayden Flasch scored the final two goals in a three-minute span in the second half, both times using his speed and dribbling ability to beat the Little Chute (0-13) defense.

Flasch was the leading scorer last year and is second on the team in goals this year and uses his speed and physicality to put opponents under pressure.

“He’s an excellent athlete and competitor,” Miller said. “He’s a playmaker, he controls the ball really well and he makes stuff happen on the field.”

Campbellsport moves on to play No. 1 Sheboygan Christian/Sheboygan Area Lutheran on Thursday in the regional semifinal.
