Campbellsport wins the Kettle Moraine Bowl

This story will be updated once stats become available.

Linebacker Carter Gellings picked off Kewaskum quarterback Eli Ogi about halfway through the second quarter.

The next play Cougars running back Riley Kohlmann ran for a 51-yard touchdown to give Campbellsport a two-score lead.

A strong second quarter sparked the Cougars to a 45-14 rivalry win on Friday night at Dan D. O'Brien field.

Coach Todd Wondra said Gellings helped to turn the game and has been an impact player through the first two weeks.

"Carter came up huge again this week," Wondra said. "Last week with that interception and now again tonight to set the offense up.

It turned the game, I think [Kewaskum's] heads dragged and we kept on the gas pedal."

Kohlmann's TD was the second of the quarter after the Indians were able to hold Campbellsport scoreless in the first. Earlier in the second, senior running back Colton Ruplinger ran in from short distance to start the scoring.

Kohlmann said he saw the hole and knew he would be able to hit it.

"I just saw an open gap," Kohlmann said. "Shoutout to the offensive line, they did they're jobs on that play and we scored.

"We ran the ball really good so hopefully we can carry that on to next week."

Kohlmann, Ruplinger and junior Trenton Schladweiler all rushed effectively, which Wondra said is one of the biggest strengths of his team.

"All three of the starters are new to varsity this year," Wondra said. "They're all still learning, but they're getting better as the weeks go on, they're getting comfortable and it's nice to have a balanced attack to be able to go inside and outside.

"Teams can't just pile up the middle this year."

Schladweiler added two TDs of his own in the second half, one was a 45-yarder.

Before Kewaskum could blink, the Cougars had the lead out to 31-0 with 8:32 left in the third quarter. Campbellsport scored all 31 points in a 15-minute stretch of game time.

Ten of the points in that stretch came directly off of special teams plays. Less than two minutes before halftime, Kewaskum muffed a punt, leading to a Luke Pendowski 34-yard field goal.

The Cougars blocked a punt in the end zone in the second half, which lineman Elijah Fleischman recovered for a TD.

Campbellsport displayed even more depth at running back late in the game when sophomore Christopher Taddey scored from 7 yards out.

Junior linebacker Blake Heltemes bolted all over the field, leading the Cougars defensively. The defense limited Kewaskum's scoring opportunities to two second-half TDs when the game had already been decided.

Wondra said he was pleased with how the defense played.

"Defense played great tonight," Wondra said. "Guys were flying all over and shut them down. We gave up a late touchdown and an easy one earlier so we probably should have held them to zero, but we'll clean that stuff up and keep working."

Kohlmann, who also plays linebacker, said the defense was hungry to get after the quarterback.

"I thought the defense did a great job hitting the quarterback," Kohlmann said. "Tackling was pretty good, we could work on that a little bit. Overall, we played good as a team."
