Caspary no-hitter lifts Lomira past WLA

Haleigh Caspary kept the Winnebago Lutheran Academy hitters off balance and when the Vikings put bat on ball, her defense made plays.

Lomira's sophomore pitcher allowed just four runners to reach base during a no-hitter performance. The Lions scraped enough offense to earn the 2-0 win against WLA from the Lomira Community Diamonds on Tuesday afternoon.

Caspary said her mindset is always about enjoying the game because she knows she has the support of her teammates.

"[The key was] having fun with my teammates," Caspary said. "My teammates are always there for me. I couldn't do it without them.

"They're like family to me. I know I can come to them with anything and it just feels amazing."

Caspary finished with 11 strikeouts.

"She works really hard day in and day out so very happy she got that," Lomira coach Stacey Clark said. "She also had to work for it and her defense helped her out, too. It's nice to know she's in there and going to give it her all."

WLA pitcher Maddie Anhalt was Caspary's counterpart in the circle and pitched excellently. Anhalt gave up just three hits and kept Lomira (12-2 overall, 6-1 in Flyway) scoreless until the fourth inning.

Lions sophomore shortstop Trista Gassner walked and came around to score on a series of passed balls to score the first run of the game.

Clark said she thought the offense did a good job of not pressing and staying patient.

"The girls are really good at communicating what they're seeing in their at-bats," Clark said. "And the energy from the bench really lifts everybody up as soon as somebody is on.

"I think they truly believe they can make something happen."

Gassner scored for the second time in the bottom of the sixth when she led off with a double and then was driven in by teammate Taylor Bloohm.

WLA (4-6, 2-5) had its best opportunity to score right away in the first when Anna Trewin walked and Addy Suprenand got on from a Lomira error. The Vikings had a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts to strand those two on base.
