St. Mary's Springs tennis double team of Olivia Kremer and Anna Willis jumped out to an early lead in their match against Aeryn Messmann and Breleigh Mengel from Jefferson, but couldn't sustain the success and lost in the first round at the WIAA state individual tennis tournament.
Kremer and Willis used aggressive serving in the first set to force the Jefferson duo into multiple mistakes. The Ledgers pair won the first set 6-3.
The two looked to be cruising to a straight-sets win in the second as well, jumping out to a 3-2 lead. That's when the momentum shifted and Messmann/Mengel won four straight games to win the second set 6-3.
The Ledgers were never able to regain the momentum and Jefferson continued to wear them down in the tiebreak set, which Messmann/Mengel won 10-5.
Despite the loss at state, it was an impressive season for Kremer and Willis, who finished the season 15-5 and a regular season record of 13-2.
