Ledgers softball blanks Orioles to start Flyway play

Aubrey Hafermann drove in Addy King in the top of the first inning with a double.

That would be enough with Gracie Konkol dealing in the circle for St. Mary’s Springs softball in its 2-0 win against North Fond du Lac.

Konkol got the complete game 2-hit shutout, working out of three major jams in the last three innings. The Orioles (2-1 overall, 0-1 in Flyway) loaded the bases in the 5th and got two on in both the 6th and 7th innings.

Konkol, a junior, said she knew she just had to hit her spots and she could be confident.

“I just knew that if I pitched it to the right location, my teammates would have my back and I did,” Konkol said. “The ump was a little tough on the strike zone, but I made it work and got out of those innings.

“They had a lot of runners on base where we got out of innings so that was good.”

After primarily playing shortstop her first two varsity seasons, Konkol said she is still getting used to being back in the circle.

“I haven’t pitched this much since I was in 10U,” Konkol said. “It feels good to be back out on the mound. I’m a little sore, but my body will get used to it and I’m loving it so far.”

Konkol finished with 7 strikeouts.

King, the senior shortstop, led Springs (2-1, 1-0) offensively. She went 2-for-3 with an RBI and the first run. She drove in Allie Waechter in the second inning.
