Ledgers tennis stays unbeaten, sweeps New London

Jasline Loynes has had a challenging role for the St. Mary's Springs tennis team this season.

The junior has stepped into the No. 1 role for the Ledgers and once again battled in a close match as Springs got the 7-0 win against New London on Monday afternoon at Buttermilk Creek Park.

"It's been hard a little bit because some girls are really good," Loynes said. "Some girls are my perfect level, so it's good, but I always end up with a tiebreaker."

Loynes won 7-6, 6-3 against New London's Kate Johnston. It was the final singles match to finish because of the tiebreaker in the first set and the dominance from the other Springs' singles players.

Junior teammate Scarlett Gaertig said that most opponents that Loynes has to face play tennis nearly year-round.

"Most of the girls Jas plays play year-round," Gaertig said. "Jas is a three-sport athlete so she gets a mix of everything."

The win kept Springs undefeated, for the Ledgers have now won all 10 matches of the season.

A big part of the team's success is because of its depth. Gaertig, who is in the No. 3 singles spot, and senior Alexandra Welsch, the No. 4 player, are both undefeated.

"All of us singles players know how to play and can read our player really well," Gaertig said. "As well as knowing where to place it, we all have good tennis awareness and know what to do to get the job done."

Gaertig won 6-0, 6-1 and Welsch won 6-1, 6-1. Lucile Rathke got a 6-2, 6-1 win on Court 2.

Springs got all three doubles wins. Its top team of seniors Olivia Kremer and Anna Willis made quick work of their opponents, winning 6-0, 6-1. Willis' ability at the net along with both players' strong serves makes the doubles team formidable.

"I think Olivia and Anna are actually insane," Loynes said. "They're both good at certain things. Anna is insane at the net because she's so long and they're both good at serving and Olivia is actually fast with the ball. She gets around the court."

Caroline Adams and Stella VandeSlunt won their match 6-3, 6-2 and Frida Besne and Simone Blackburn got a tight win 7-6, 7-5.

"Caroline really knows how to hit the volleys and take care of the net," Gaertig said. "They all have really good chemistry."
