Both teams started slowly.
Lomira found its offensive rhythm in the last 6:00 of the first half and ran away with a 60-39 home nonconference win against Markesan on Monday night.
The score was 10-9 in favor of the Lions around the 6:30 mark in the first half. The low scoring was mostly in part to a solid defensive effort from Lomira, but having their shots, although well selected, not falling.
“Nobody’s ever going to have a perfect game,” coach Liz Cook said.
Then came the offensive frenzy. Lomira went on a 20-10 run over Markesan in the final 6 minutes to bring the score at half to 30-19.
Freshman Josie Christan was everywhere, tallying 17 points in the first half and finishing with a game-high 29.
Senior Savanna Frea scored 10 points and played phenomenal defense on both of Markesan’s bigs.
“They have a really good post player, and [Frea] worked her butt off down there,” Cook said.
Once Lomira (8-6) got going, Markesan never really had the opportunity to get back into it.
Markesan (7-4) seemingly tried everything, from face-guarding Lomira’s freshman phenom, Christian, to playing physically with the attempt of rattling the Lion's cage, but it was a steel trap.
Lomira’s lead never felt in danger the entire game.
Lomira also played extremely hard from the tip to the final seconds; Cook gave all the credit for that to her team.
“[The credit] all goes to the girls," Cook said. "I can tell them what to do all I want, but if they don’t go out there and execute it, it doesn’t work.”
