Lomira softball dominates WLA

Nora Buske had everything working on Tuesday evening.

The junior pitcher had her dominant stuff in Lomira's 8-0 win against Winnebago Lutheran Academy in a WIAA Regional Semifinal game at home.

"Every pitch was working good for me," Buske said. "I had a lot of support from the bench and from my teammates and that's really helpful."

Buske tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters.

The Lions (20-6) scored two runs on three hits in the first inning before even recording an out. Trista Gassner, Taylor Bloohm and Savanna Frea each hit singles; Bloohm and Frea picked up RBIs.

"Once we get a couple of runs on the board, it's kind of a relaxer," Buske said. "It's OK if they get a hit or whatever because my defense has my back no matter what, but it's calming to know we're fluid on offense and defense."

WLA (10-11) didn't get its first hit off of Buske until the sixth inning when freshman Lilly Hiemstra singled. Hiemstra reached base twice for the Vikings, earlier in the game on a hit-by-pitch.

Lomira scored in each inning, but the second. Frea got her second hit of the game when she led off the third inning with a home run to left field.

"Different from last game, we attacked a lot more," Frea said. "For me personally, I knew the best pitch was going to be the first pitch, so I just went and did what I do.

Frea was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Catcher Morgan Schroeder was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Buske added a 2-for-4 performance; she scored both times she was on base.

The win sets up a regional final between the Lions and Laconia.

"We really dug deep in this game because we want to keep going," Buske said. "We are the team to keep fighting for what we want. We've been there for each other, and our coaches really prepare us.

"We want this so bad."
