Quick starts have been the name of the game for Lomira softball so far this season.
The Lions coasted a little more than normal in the later innings, but still found a way to win 6-4 against Kettle Moraine Lutheran on Monday evening.
"We have gotten off to some fast starts, which is nice to see all season," Lions coach Stacey Clark said. "We kind of stagnated tonight, which actually in all of our other games we haven't done at much, we've been better at keeping the rallies going."
Lomira scored three runs in the first two innings to put the Chargers (1-3) in an early hole. Junior pitcher Nora Buske got the start and pitched three innings of shutout ball while striking out seven.
Buske also the leader offensively for the Lions, accounting for four of the six runs. She went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
Clark brought in freshman pitcher Eleanor Collies for the final four innings. She earned the win and Clark said it was good to get her some innings under pressure.
"She has different spin than Nora does and we wanted to give her some innings where she really could get her work in and make her stuff spin with the pressure on," Clark said. "It was a close game when she came in."
Sophomore Savanna Frea did not make an out in the game. She went 4-for-4 with three RBIs.
Lomira (6-0) has played a tough nonconference schedule to this point and Clark said the strength of the Flyway is part of the reason for that.
"The Flyway is always tough and we know that so we want to make sure we keep that level of expectation on our kids and put the pressure on early in the season so we're just used to it later in the season," Clark said.
