Lomira did not start hot.
Highlighted by Winnebago Lutheran senior big-man Max Hansmann’s fast break slam in the opening minutes, Lomira was down 13-4, prompting coach Dan Domask to call a timeout at the 13:55 mark in the first half.
“Exactly [what I said], I don’t think I want to tell you," Domask said. "I’ll just say that I challenged them.”
Domask’s team took the challenge and won the home Flyway game 60-57.
Senior guard Jackson Goebel took Domask’s challenge to heart - scoring on back-to-back possessions a minute after that timeout and finishing with 14. Sophomore forward Blake Steger chipped in 13.
That pair combined for 20 points in the first half during Lomira's run to take a 34-25 halftime lead.
Domask was transparent that he didn’t know who was going to step up for the Lions (8-1 overall, 4-1 in Flyway) on Friday.
“I didn’t know who was going to rise to the occasion because we lost so much on the stat sheet with Jake [Broeske] being gone,” Domask said.
Goebel wasn’t just challenged by Domask though, WLA’s senior lockdown guard Marcus Christensen gave him a challenge of his own.
Christensen held him below his 16.5 point average, while playing with 4 fouls for a large portion of the second half. He fouled out with about 15 seconds to play. Ticky-tack fouls were a common theme for fouls between both teams.
The teams combined for 20 fouls in the second half.
WLA (5-4, 3-2) had the lead for a large portion in the first half. Once the Vikings lost the lead, they never got it back.
WLA’s offensive phenom, junior guard Gannan Schwartz led the way with a brilliant offensive performance, scoring 31.
He gave them a chance to head to OT at the buzzer, but his right corner 3-pointer was long.
WLA came close to tying multiple times towards the end of the game.
Schwartz had a big and-1 with 2:35 left to bring them within 3; WLA had another and-1 that was then scratched out for a charge call and Christensen hit a big 3 down the stretch to bring them within 2.
None of these times could they got over the hump.
