Lomira sweeps players of the year in football all conference

Lomira football had the two best players in the Flyway conference this year, according to the coaches of the conference.

Taylor Schaumberg and Sam Schraufnagel were voted as the offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.

Schaumberg is the Flyway's leading rusher with 1,709 yards and 25 touchdowns. He has done that on just 203 carries, averaging 8.4 yards per carry.

Schraufnagel leads the league in tackles for loss with 25. His 11.5 sacks is also top in the conference.

Lomira had nine total first-team selections. Schraufnagel was on both the offensive and defensive first teams as a tight end and a defensive end. Senior teammate Caden Yanke also made the first team twice, both as a receiver and linebacker.

The Lions had a pair of offensive linemen on the first team in seniors Josh Polster and Dalton Zingsheim. Jack Luedtke was a unanimous pick at defensive back. He has 68 tackles, eight passes defended and an interception.

Easton Zangl was voted as the conference's top kicker, going 53-for-56 on extra points so far this season.

The Flyway, which is usually a run-heavy league, had three unanimous running backs on the first team. Mayville's Sawyer Hardesty and Laconia's Jack Rens joined Schaumberg as players on every coach's ballot.

All three running backs rushed for more than 1,000 yards.

Hardesty, who was also a first team defensive end, was two of five total first-team selections for the Cardinals. Offensive lineman Logan Surita, defensive back Joren Schlender and defensive tackle Owen Steger were all picked.

Steger was a unanimous selection thanks to his 92 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Schlender led the conference in the regular season with four interceptions.

St. Mary's Springs senior Ben Anderson was voted the league's best quarterback. The dual-threat QB accounted for 1,756 yards and 19 touchdowns passing and rushing combined.

Springs senior linebackers Tayte Schoofs and Noah Moul as well as junior offensive lineman Beckett Longley were first teamers.

Campbellsport finished fourth in the conference. The first teamers for the Cougars were defensive tackle Emmett Gonnering, linebacker Blake Heltemes and offensive lineman Amadeo Rodriguez.

The final two spots on the first team went to Laconia senior linebackers Colton Hagner and Winnebago Lutheran junior defensive back Frankie Wiedmeyer. Hagner led the Flyway in tackles, Wiedmeyer made 93 total tackles from his cornerback spot.

Mayville led the conference with six second team picks. Lomira and Springs each had five.
