Alexa Castro-Martinez was a terror on the left side of the field on Thursday afternoon.
He scored twice in a two-minute span to help the Mayville Cardinals beat Campbellsport 6-0 to open Flyway conference play at Ribbons Memorial Park.
In both the 13th and 15th minutes, Castro-Martinez raced down the left wing and hit powerful shots to the right side of the goal.
Mayville (2-2 overall, 1-0 in Flyway) scored four times in the first half to put the match out of reach early. Senior Blake Peterson opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he burst through the right side of the defense.
Melvin Barojas Teodoro scored about 10 minutes before halftime on a pass from Nicholas Wojahn to put the Cardinals firmly in the drivers' seat.
It was the second win of the week for Mayville and the team scored 9 goals in its two matches.
Senior captain Dennis Feucht said the Cardinals have played more as a team, which led to the offensive success.
"It's been a case where we start to create options and have started playing less selfish," Feucht said. "We were playing more selfish in our first few games, now we're picking up more goals and getting wins."
Campbellsport (0-2, 0-1) had several opportunities in the first half, particularly through junior Cayden Flasch, who got past Mayville's defense on two occasions, but had shots saved or blocked.
The Cardinals added two second-half goals from a Hayden Benedict penalty and a goal from Javier Meraz-Torres.
Feucht said the team has to keep working to maintain the momentum it currently has.
"We can't get cocky," Feucht said. "We have to stay humble and always work hard at practice. That's the key."
