Mayville had a response to every Winnebago Lutheran Academy run.
The Cardinals led nearly wire-to-wire in each set on their way to a 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 Flyway sweep of the Vikings on Thursday night at WLA.
Mayville (10-7 overall, 2-1 in Flyway) defended and passed well, which coach Alan Capps said was no surprise. Capps said it was the offense that impressed him more.
"We wanted to take a step in the right direction tonight," Capps said. "If you look at any of our matches, our defense is fantastic. The ball does not hit the ground.
"Our offense is what has been struggling. To see that come alive tonight and our hitting percentage with a lot of kills and few errors, that makes any coach smile."
Senior setter Aubrey Thom got Mayville into their offense seamlessly because of the passes she was given from her teammates.
Thom had 25 assists and was able to spread the ball around to a number of teammates. She also had four aces.
She said the team knew it had to play well to keep up with the teams that are ahead of them in the conference.
"Pregame, we all connect and spend a lot of time together," Thom said. "We knew we really needed this, especially for conference. Our performance was really great."
Sophomore Leah Vossekull led the team with 10 kills. Senior Emily Derkowski and sophomore Lillian Mansueto each added nine kills. Mansueto also had a match-high 27 digs.
Mayville's sophomores combined for 47 digs, 23 kills and five aces.
The Cardinals were also missing starting libero Reagan Hardesty, who is another sophomore.
"Our sophomores are so mature and advanced in their volleyball game," Thom said. "Everyone meshes really well together."
WLA (3-10, 0-3) got a team-high nine kills from Jenna Petrowitz and 17 digs from libero Hailey Wolf.
