At times it felt like Omro's Ava Koch and Lomira's Josie Christian were going shot-for-shot on Tuesday night.
Omro's supporting cast was able to get into the mix more than Lomira's as the Foxes knocked off the Lions 50-40 to earn their first Flyway win of the season.
The pair of standout scorers lit up the scoreboard. Koch finished with 20 points and Christian had a game-high 29.
"I try not to put too much pressure on myself and really just see what opportunities come in the game and just always trying to make good opportunities for my teammates," Koch said. "Obviously, [scoring] is a huge confidence boost for myself."
Omro coach Tyler Geisthardt said they knew Christian was going to score; it was up to Omro's defense to shut down the rest of the lineup.
His team did that, limiting Lomira's production to just three other players and 11 points.
"We knew [Christian] was going to get her points, but if we took care of everyone else, we felt like we had a good chance," Geisthardt said. "That was one of our best defensive games. I know when you have someone score 29 on you, it's hard to say that.
"She's just so talented. We had bodies around her, she just made tough baskets."
Lomira (2-3 overall, 1-1 in Flyway) runs a patient offense, with several possessions that lasted more than 40 seconds.
Geisthardt said he was proud of how well his team continued to play hard defense, even on the long, grinding possessions.
"We really honed in on our help defense," Geisthardt said. "Anytime you're going against a team running flex, you know you're going to get a lot of screens and possessions can take a long time. Our help defense was some of the best it's been all season tonight."
Omro (4-2, 1-1) got another nice outing from freshman Kamryn Gehrke, for she had 10 points, including two baskets coming in transition after she jumped into passing lanes and got steals.
Geisthardt said he saw the work ethic starting from this past summer.
"She put a focus on getting into the weight room," Geisthardt said. "She's got the body type we love for someone who slashes hard to the basket. She does a really nice job using her body and size to create lanes as she gets close to the rim.
"Really excited to see where she can go with that, and I think her finishing is only going to get better."
Lomira went on a run in the second half, which included five straight points from Christian, to cut the Omro lead to 39-36.
Over the next two minutes of game action, Koch scored back-to-back baskets, recorded two steals and assisted Ari King for an open 3-pointer to help fend off the Lions for good.
Koch said it was good for the team to see that it can close out games such as this down the stretch.
"It's good to know that all five of us on the court can trust each other in all aspects," Koch said. "Having help defense, getting good shots, rebounding, it just knits us together to play as a team."
