Spartans on the upset trail to sectional final

It has been something of a revenge tour for the Laconia Spartan softball team this postseason.

After finishing third in the Flyway, they were given a No. 3 seed in their Division 3 regional behind both Mayville and Lomira, which both finished ahead of Laconia in the conference.

The Spartans' record against both was 1-3 in the regular season, the lone win was a 2-1 win on May 9.

It was that win that started what is now an eight-game winning streak, including the last two upset wins: a 3-2 win at Lomira and an 8-6 win at Mayville.

During the winning streak, senior pitcher Addison Maurer has seven appearances and is 5-0 with 42 strikeouts while giving up just nine earned runs.

Lily Schultz and Gwen Westphal each rose to the occasion in the win against Mayville. Aubrey Maurer was walked four times, which left Schultz and Westphal in big spots.

The two combined for five hits, four RBIs and four runs. Schultz hit a solo home run to center field in the second inning.

Schultz was also the hero in the Lomira game. She grounded into a fielders choice to drive in the eventual winning run. Aubrey Maurer was walked three times in that game.

The next postseason hurdle is Thursday afternoon at Taylor Park in Rosendale against Shoreland Lutheran with a trip to state on the line.

The Pacers, which finished third in the Metro Classic, are 13-5 and were the No. 2 seed in the bottom half of the sectional. They beat Dominican/Eastbrook Academy 7-2 in the sectional semifinal.
