Springs golf headed to state

Ben Baker hit his tee shot on the 18th hole way right.

It ended up in the first fairway. The sophomore hit a spectacular recovery shot and drilled the 8-foot birdie putt to close out his round.

That home course knowledge of South Hills was one of the difference-makers in St. Mary's Springs punching its ticket to the WIAA State Golf Championships next week at Blackwolf Run in Kohler.

"Knowing the course well helped a lot with teams not being able to practice here because of the weather," Baker said. "It was easy for us."

The No. 7 Ledgers finished second, shooting a 313, which was just two strokes behind No. 1 Cambridge. They had a 14-stroke cushion on No. 2 Sheboygan Lutheran, which finished third.

Baker finished runner-up to Kian Bystol-Flores from Cambridge for medalist honors. Baker shot a 72, which included three birdies.

Teammate Tyler Hoffmann shot a 76, including a front-nine 36. Hoffmann was able to steady himself after starting the back nine with four-straight bogeys.

Junior Isaac Sabel gave the Ledgers a boost from his fifth-seed spot. He shot an 81, which was 10th place and allowed Springs to drop an 86.

State golf is Monday and Tuesday.
