Springs soccer finally gets past WLA

In the four years Ellie Judkins has been at St. Mary's Springs, there is one team the Ledgers had not beaten: Winnebago Lutheran Academy.

That changed Monday night when Springs dominated play and found a way to a 1-0 win against its crosstown rival.

"I’m just really proud of our team," Judkins said. "We played to our wings, and we played a lot of our options and I think we just played really good as a team and that’s what got us the win.”

Springs (4-3 overall, 2-0 in Flyway) scored in the 33rd minute when senior Molly Diedrich got on the end of an Anna Willis corner kick and finished into the corner of the net.

Judkins said Willis' ability to serve in accurate corner kicks means that the Ledgers always have a chance to score.

"She always puts it right where I need it and I always at least get a touch on it or another player gets a touch on it so corner kicks are really key for us," Judkins said. "It was great because I’m usually always the one to crash in on corner kicks, but we had [Diedrich] step up and put it right in the corner. It was awesome."

The Ledgers had five corners on the night to go along with 18 shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Elayna Schultz made 17 saves for the Vikings (1-6, 0-2).

WLA did not have much success going forward, for the Vikings forced just three saves from Springs goalkeeper Anne Barr.

Judkins said her message as a captain to her team was to celebrate the win, but then get right back to work.

"I encourage us to enjoy it, but we still have a lot of conference games ahead and we have to focus on those games," Judkins said.
