Springs softball upsets Lomira

St. Mary's Springs' Nevaeh Galligan hit a hard grounder at Lomira shortstop Trista Gassner.

The ball bounced under Gassner's glove and the Ledgers runners were on the move. Greta Pleuss and Sophie Schneider, who was pinch-running for Allie Waechter, both scored, giving Springs a two-run lead in its 5-4 upset win over Lomira.

The Lions (14-4 overall, 8-2 in Flyway) put pressure on junior pitcher Gracie Konkol in the top of the seventh. The Lions had runners on first and second when Taylor Bloohm hit a ground ball back to Konkol, who overthrew the ball into left field, which scored Nora Buske.

Konkol bounced back and struck out Piersten Litterick to end the game with runners on second and third.

"I was definitely nervous, but I knew that I had gotten all these girls out in previous innings and that if I threw the ball where it was called to be thrown that they were going to hit it in the right spot and we were going to get outs," Konkol said.

Springs (7-9, 5-5) scored in the first and fourth innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Maliyah Galligan had the RBI double to center in the fourth.

Buske gave the Lions their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the fifth, hitting a ball into right field, driving in two runs. Pleuss could not track the ball down in right and Buske raced around to score on the error.

Despite the error, Pleuss also made a diving catch in the top of the fourth inning. Pleuss was the leading batter, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Konkol said it was great to have Pleuss in the lineup for senior night.

"She hasn't been here very much this season because she's had travel volleyball, but when she's been here she's definitely made such an impact," Konkol said. "I just knew that she wanted to win tonight and she just got in the box and didn't think about it and she had two big hits for us."
