Springs track & field performs well at Lightning Invitational

St. Mary's Springs girls' relay teams headlined a strong performance at the Lightning Invitational hosted by Lake Country Lutheran.

All four relay teams finished inside the top-three in their respective races, including a first-place finish for the 4x100 meter team of Riley Walters, Gwen Weaver, Scarlett Gaertig and Lexi Coon. They finished in 54.34 seconds.

Gaertig also raced in second-place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x400 teams.

Junior Grace Coon, who was a state qualifier last spring, had a strong start to the outdoor season. In addition to her performance on the 4x200 team, she won the 200-meter dash and finished second in the 100-meter dash, just two-hundredths of a second behind first.

Freshman Lucas Babler was the highest-finishing Ledger on the boys team, for he won the 800-meter run. His teammate Hazen Norten, a junior, finished third about a second behind. Babler also raced the 1600 and finished third.

Springs was dominant in the field events. Olivia Kremer won both the shot put and discus with throws of 32 feet, 7 inches and 85 feet, 9 inches, respectively. Teammate Rose Fruend finished second in the discus and fourth in shot put.

Grace Coon finished third in the high jump. The Ledgers also had top-three performers in the long jump in Walters and John Coon. Weaver and Lexi Coon finished fourth and seventh in the long jump, respectively.
