T&F: Fond du Lac county wins Berlin Invitational

Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Laconia and North Fondy helped to lead Fond du Lac County to its second-consecutive win against Waushara and Green Lake Counties in Berlin on Thursday night.

The unique event started in 2022, pitting four schools from each side and crowning one of the counties the winner. Waushara/Green Lake won the first time before the past two that Fond du Lac has won.

The county vs. county race is unique, but teams still compete individually as well, and the competition was littered with personal records. WLA's boys took first with 384 points; WLA's girls finished third while Laconia's finished fourth.

WLA's stellar sophomores Gannan Schwartz and Frankie Wiedmeyer each ran PRs and won their respective events; Schwartz with an 11.39-second 100-meter dash and Wiedmeyer with a 23.95 in the 200.

Kaiden Schmitz returned from injury for the Vikings. He won both the discus and the shot put, which he threw a personal-best 54-feet, 2-inches. The throw broke a 43-year-old school record that was set by Bill Strasser in 1981.

The boys relay teams for the Vikings dominated, especially in the 4x100 and 4x200 races, both of which they won. WLA finished runners-up in the other two relays.

Laconia's girls relay teams won the 4x100 and 4x800. The latter of which the team of Hayden Johnson, Marissa Johnson, Tierney Madigan and Molly Duel ran in 10:12.99.

Leonard and Madigan also ran PRs in the 100 and 200, respectively. Leonard won with a 12.85-second time; Madigan was runner-up, running in 1:03.10.

Marissa Johnson was runner-up in the 800 with a season-best 2:32.56.

In the field, Kinsly Laudolff continued an impressive spring. She won the discus and the shot put; her shot throw of 34-feet, 11-inches was a PR.

Other notable performances for WLA's boys athletes included wins for Bennett Midthun in the 3200 and Clayton Ebert in the 300 hurdles. Sophomore Cole Keifenheim finished second in the pole vault, but hit a PR 13-feet, 6-inches. Keifenheim's vault also broke the school record.

Carter Bonlender was the top finisher for Laconia's boys' team with a runner-up finish in the 1600 and a third in the 800.

North Fond du Lac sophomores Garrett Garcia and Kaisyn Schraufnagel won the 800 and 1600, respectively. Freshman Sunjaya Greenlee ran a PR 13.02 in the 100 to finish third.
