T&F: Kiel regional results

Campbellsport's boys are WIAA Regional champions for the first time in program history.

Just 10 days after winning their first Flyway title in 51 years, the Cougars won the regional hosted at Kiel High School. They edged out Flyway rival Winnebago Lutheran 135-131.

Monday was also the anticipated varsity debut for Campbellsport senior Josh Onwunili. He won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, edging out WLA sophomore Gannan Schwartz in both events.

"In the 100, I took first, but I see a lot of ways I could have improved it," Onwunili said.

He also ran the second leg of the 4x100 relay team, which earned a third-place finish.

With the uncertainty surrounding whether he would be able to compete, the first time Onwunili practiced with the relay team was Sunday after graduation.

"It's still a bit rough, but we're going to improve it," Onwunili said. "We got it. Hopefully we're making it to state with that."

Campbellsport once again dominated the hurdles races. Evan Wilcox won both the 110- and 300-hurdles with classmate Caleb Smith finishing runner-up in both.

WLA's Bennett Midthun qualified for sectionals in three events: the 800, 1600 and 4x800 relay. Midthun said his goal was to break the school record in the 800.

"Obviously, I was a second and change short, but that puts me in a good position for [sectionals] because I'll probably have to end up running the school record to make it through to state," Midthun said.

With a strong sectional that the Vikings are in, Midthun said he thinks he will have to run a PR to qualify for state in the 1600 as well.

"I'm not sure what gets me in at this point," Midthun said. "I think it's a 4:31. If I push it on the third lap, I should be able to get through to state."

Campbellsport's Sienna Hewitt won the pole vault with a height of 11-feet, 4-inches. Her season-best is 11-feet, 9-inches, which is second in the state.
