Vikings split at Kewaskum triangular

Updated: Apr 16

Game One: Kewaskum 6, WLA 4

Anna Trewin hit a hard liner that looked like it was going over the head of shortstop Elizabeth Calliari.

The Kewaskum sophomore jumped up, snared the hit and threw behind the Viking runner for the double play.

The Winnebago Lutheran Academy softball team had a couple of tough breaks on hard-hit balls during its 6-4 loss against Kewaskum in the first game of Saturday's triangular.

"That's a good Kewaskum team," WLA coach John Suprenand said. "They're going to be right there all the way through the season and our girls battled."

Trewin's swing came in the fifth inning with two on and no one out with the Vikings trailing by two.

"That's the game of softball," Suprenand said. "You can hit it hard three times and go 0-for-3 or you can hit three bloopers and it looks like you're the hitting star. Anna hit the ball hard today so you just have to keep encouraging.

"Yeah, it's frustrating, it would have been a big hit for us, but I think she knows she's improving in that way."

Leah Matthias led WLA (1-3) offensively, she drove in all four runs; two with a double in the fourth inning and two with a single in the sixth.

Junior pitcher Maddie Anhalt took the loss, but struck out 13 batters. She only gave up three earned runs of the six Kewaskum (8-0) scored.

"I'm super proud of Maddie," Suprenand said. "She'll be there all year for us, we're going to lean on her and she wants that. She deserved to win [this game]."

Game Two: WLA 9, New Holstein 6

The message from coach Suprenand going into the bottom of the seventh inning was simple: no one makes the first out.

The Vikings softball team took that to heart, scoring five runs without recording a single out in their 9-6 walk-off win against New Holstein (4-3) on Saturday afternoon.

"That's how softball goes, it's contagious and that really what happened in that seventh inning," Suprenand said. "We didn't make an out in the seventh inning, everyone did [their job] right down to Kylah."

Sophomore catcher Kylah Simon won the game for WLA (2-3) with a grand slam, sending the Viking fans into pandemonium.

"What better way to hit your first career home run in high school than to have a walk-off a grand slam," Suprenand said.

Trewin led off the last inning with a double, followed by an Addy Suprenand single, a Maddie Anhalt single and an Averie Suprenand walk.

Anhalt drove in Trewin to make it a one-run game when Simon came to the plate. Anhalt went 3-for-4 in the second game.

Where Trewin had bad luck in the first game, she found success in the second. The Vikings' junior shortstop went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a home run.

"I'm just focusing on watching the ball all the way in and not pulling my head as much," Trewin said. "We just all wanted to focus on getting on base this game."

Trewin led the game off with the home run. Addy Suprenand bunted and scored on a throwing error right after.

Coach Suprenand said he thinks the win will have a positive impact on his team's confidence.

"We need confidence because we're a young group and every positive thing we can take from a game really will build that momentum I think going back into conference with three in a row," Suprenand said. "Softball is a game of momentum.

"Our girls are sticking with it. They're believing in what we're teaching them and it paid off today, for sure."
