WLA falls in season opener

In the 13th minute, Kiel midfielder Lydia Vander Meer slipped a perfect pass through to teammate Addison Vogel, who smashed a shot into the left corner of the net.

Vogel and the defending state-champion Raiders did not have much rust to knock off in a 4-0 win at home against Winnebago Lutheran Academy on Friday afternoon.

Vogel scored again in the 18th minute and again about eight minutes later to complete the first-half hat trick. She finished the scoring with nine minutes left.

WLA coach Rev. David Haag said he thought the Vikings played well despite a number of new starters this season.

"A lot of players stepped up and played well," Haag said. "I thought Micaela Toll played really well at left back. It's the first time we threw her to the wolves. Abby Cole also played well in her first gig at center back."

Eight starting positions for the Vikings are either new starters or returning players in new positions. One of the new starters is sophomore goalkeeper Elayna Schultz, who had 7 saves.

WLA (0-1) only carved out a handful of offensive opportunities, including forcing just one save.

The Vikings canceled their first three matches because of weather. Haag said part of the slow start offensively could be because of the lack of outside field time.

"My biggest concern is we just haven't had time to practice a lot outside on a bigger field so we need to try to get better offensively," Haag said.
