It was a physical game.
There were 34 fouls called in Tuesday's Flyway game between the Campbellsport and the Winnebago Lutheran, a testament to the physicality of the battle
That physicality was largely in part to a fantastic defensive effort from WLA, holding Campbellsport down to earn a 56-40 win.
“Anytime you can hold a team to 40, you give yourself a heck of a chance,” coach Mason DeNoyer said. “[They] should be proud of the way they played.”
WLA’s strong defense was put on display best by the fact that Campbellsport's leading scorer, junior Noah Bobb, was held to less than his average by a fair margin. Bobb entered the game averaging 12.7 points per game, WLA (5-3 overall, 3-1 in Flyway) held him to 7.
Junior Marcus Christensen led WLA's defensive effort; he had a plethora of steals, plenty of hard-nosed defensive rebounds and 5 points alongside his lockdown-defense.
“He always gives 100 percent, all the time,” junior Gannan Schwartz said. “He’s always guarding their best player.”
Schwartz led the Vikings' offensive effort, scoring 19.
“It’s awesome to play with Gannan,” said Marcus Christensen “He’s one of the best in the conference.”
In a final attempt to slow down Schwartz and WLA’s offensive barrage, Campbellsport threw a 2-3 zone at them coming straight out of half, though it was to no avail.
WLA’s ball movement was too clean.
“None of us are really too selfish,” Schwartz said. “We move the ball really well.”
Campbellsport (3-7, 1-3) got its best offensive effort from junior Jace Goebel, who had 12, with 8 coming in the second half.
Denoyer also made sure to give credit where he felt credit was due. He said Campbellsport played hard.
“I credit [Campbellsport] coach Ethan Elliott man, they play hard and they play physical,” DeNoyer said.
