WLA soccer splits at Sheboygan North Invite

Winnebago Lutheran boys soccer is the smallest team by far at the Sheboygan North tournament each year.

The Vikings once again went 1-1 at the invitational, beating Sheboygan South 1-0 in the morning and falling 6-0 to Port Washington in the afternoon.

The Vikings got a second-half goal from sophomore midfielder Bryce Jahnke in the first match when he volleyed in a corner kick from junior Sawyer Schuh.

"If there was going to be a guy who was going to volley it in for us right off of a corner kick, Bryce would be one of the likely candidates," coach Rev. David Haag said. "Maybe lucky, but somewhat skillful."

Jahnke, who had been used as the first substitute off the bench earlier in the season, played further up the field on Saturday.

Haag said it was a change to try to get Jahnke more involved in the attacking play, where the Vikings have struggled. They have scored just five goals in seven matches.

"We moved Bryce into the attacking midfield role," Haag said. "Just trying to get him up and more involved. He's just got so many different soccer skills."

Jahnke said he expects the team to continue to become more comfortable offensively, but there is improvement that needs to happen in several key areas.

"More communication because we're getting used to each other more," Jahnke said. "We should have better passes and score more goals.

"We need to be going hard in practices. That'll be the main thing. We have to take those seriously and that'll help improve our game."

Haag said he was not pleased with the team's performance in the first half against Sheboygan South. Despite not giving up a goal, he said he thought WLA got outplayed.

"At halftime I told them that that was our worst half of the year," Haag said. "It was our worst 40 minutes. We just didn't come out with energy or intensity and [Sheboygan South] were the opposite.

"We talked about taking that back and becoming the more aggressive team and we did that."

In the second match, WLA (3-2-2) was clearly outmatched and did not have the stamina to keep up with Port Washington, which poured six goals in.
